About this deal

The changes on the versions between 1.1 and 1.7 are relatively subtle, and are mainly component value tweaks to slightly alter the EQ response. The most interesting change is on version 1.3 - increasing the drive pot to 1M for more sustain, and the addition around 1.4 of a germanium clipping diode. The SD-1 has been around for decades, and we feel it has become underrated in the sea of overdrive pedals available today. But don't let its spartan looks and modest price tag fool you. It's a very capable overdrive pedal and has been used and abused on hundreds of pedalboards of pro artists.

You also missed the fact that in the partial schematic I gave, the gates are connected to the sources. The terms distortion and overdrive are often used interchangeably; where a distinction is made, "distortion" is used to denote a more extreme version of the effect than "overdrive". Joyo corrected by flipping the diod (as it should be in the first place) -> slightly asymmetrical clipping due to the diod -> best sounding. Almost identical to OCD. WoW.The first difference with respect to the 2009 version is the buffer formed by Q1, C1, C2, R1, R2 and D1. It is one of the most simple and common MOS-FET buffer. The input impedance is well above 1.5M in all the audible range. The Zener Diode (I was not able to read the exact model, so I put a plausible device) should be a 9.1V model intended to protect the FET from electrostatics. It is quite interesting to note that many comments on the internet refer to it as a wrong implementation of the millennium bypass but I respectfully disagree. They simply decided to add a (quite transparent and simple) buffer.

I always liked my Joyo UD, but never loved it. Flipping the Diode has made enough of a difference to start enjoying this pedal again. The overdrive pedal party is not quite complete without Boss in the mix, and the Boss SD-1 Super Overdrive is one that should never be overlooked. After all, this is the company behind the storied OD-1, which in 1977 was the first overdrive pedal on the market. Many really love its rich and complex distortion character - including myself, while others prefer a slightly smoother type of distortion - which is why it's handy that there are so many clones and mods around - you can find your preferred derivation of the core flavour that best suits your preferences. I A-B tested it with the OCD and you can now always find settings that they sound completely identical. Stevie Ray Vaughan was a Tube Screamer user, as can be seen in this photo of his spartan pedalboard. We say this every time we review a Boss stompbox, but the build quality is great. Pedal aesthetics are subjective, but we'll mention the Blues Driver is a very good looking pedal, with its blue color and yellow lettering. Like other overdrive pedals, the knobs on this one won’t surprise you: LEVEL, GAIN, and TONE. Setting the Gain at about 30% gives you that crunchy Hendrix-like tone. The interplay between your guitar’s volume knob and the BD-2’s tone leaves you with a ton of fine-grained control over the amount of crunch and break-up. Roll the gain knob to between 60% and 70% to get a nice big blues solo tone, but one that still lets you articulate chords. The Tone knob, just like the previous pedals we’ve covered, let you span between very dark to extremely bright and treble-y, and you’ll adjust this depending what guitar/amp combo you have.
